Summer Anime 2023

Just cause summer is coming to an end doesn't mean you have to give up the fun summer days. Let's continue the summer fun with some overshadowed anime series!

My Happy Marriage

  • Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Historical

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

Born from a loveless marriage, Miyo Saimori, suffers at the hands of her father, stepmother, and stepsister. Treated as a servant, Miyo is arranged to marry Kiyoka Kudo, a powerful military captain shrouded by cruel rumors. Having no choice or anywhere else to go Miyo chooses the arranged marriage. Will her married life be any better than her current situation or will she also be thrown away by Kiyoka?

I am currently living for this anime. As a fan of romance genre, I was excited to see this get an anime. This series is a wholesome-slow burn romance. We have the female MC whose self-esteem has been crushed. As Miyo learns to love herself and slowly heals thanks to Kiyoka. This is such a sweet romance anime that has become one of my favorites this season!

The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Supernatural

  • 1 Season, 13 Episodes

Saku Fukuzawa adopted a stray black cat during a cold winter night. She would never have suspected this cat, Yukichi to grow to be the size of a human and have a knack for all things housekeeping.

This is a fun slice of life anime to put on after a long day or when you just want to chill and relax. This anime does a fantastic job of capturing the joy of coming home to your pet. The happiness it can bring to be greeted by them. Although in this anime Yukichi is truly a wonderful live-in-maid who takes care of the household; while my cat unrolls the toilet paper when I leave the bathroom door open. A fun, down to earth anime to check out. 10 out of 10 recommend.

Undead Murder Farce

  • Genres: Fantasy, Mystery, Supernatural, Historical

  • 1 Season, 13 Episodes

The end of the 19th century—an ogre, a head in a cage and a maid travel around Europe to solving supernatural mysteries as they search for a man with the letter M engraved into the handle of his cane.

This is a supernatural Sherlock Holmes. This anime is not for everyone. Some may find this series boring with the lack of actions and execution of solving the crimes. Furthermore, the series is heavily based on dialogue as our protagonists try to solve crimes committed by supernatural beings on their mission to find M. In my personal opinion, I believe the witty banter among the two MC is refreshing from animes like Jujutsu Kaisen or Bleach- The 100 Year War. Slow paced, simple, and easy to digest. There is a unique beauty to the show's presentation and is anime to check out if you need a break.

Dark Gathering

  • Genres: Horror, Supernatural

  • 1 Season, 24 Episodes

Keitarou Gentouga is a college freshman who hates ghosts but has the unfortunate ability to attract spirits. After getting cursed alongside his childhood friend Eiko Houzuki, he secludes himself from society. However, with the help of Eiko, Keitarou slowly rejoins society by taking a tutoring job. He begins tutoring a child prodigy, there is another peculiarity regarding Yayoi. Unbeknownst to Keitarou, Yayoi also has spiritual ablilities. Will Keitarou be able to tutor Yayoi or will the supernatural encounters be too much?

The trend of horror shows has truly been lacking, however, Dark Gathering does well in its mix of supernatural suspense and horror. It is not your typical ghost hunt series; we see in other animes. I truly enjoy the sinister and dark atmosphere the characters create. Don’t get me wrong, it is no Another or Corpse Party but if you are in the mood for something spooky then it definitely worth checking out.

Helck

  • Genres: Action, Fantasy

  • 1 season, 24 Episodes

While humanity celebrates the defeat of the Demon King by the hands of a lone hero, the denizens of the demon world prepare for the contest of a lifetime—a tournament to decide who would inherit the title of Demon King. However, the fan favorite Helck is human! What are his intentions? Does he truly hate humanity or is he plotting something sinister?

This is another whimsical and fun anime to watch. We have the human’s vs demons but with a twist as a human has joined the demon’s side. Although this anime is comedic, the lore it presents has a wonderfully with a nice touch of mystery woven into the series. This anime doesn’t need much of an introduction, episodes 1 and 2 do a great job of explaining the plot. It is truly a criminally underrated show. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
