5 Great Romance Anime

Updated: May 4, 2022

Romance animes is one of the more popular genres outside of action/fantasy. However, romance animes are a dime dozen in the anime community, meaning there are lot of romance animes to chose from. Making the picking process a little difficult and a bit stressful. Hopefully, this list can help you narrow down what you want to watch.

5. Kaguya-sama: Love is War

  • 2 Season, 12 Episodes

  • Genres: Comedy, Romance, School-Life, Seinen, Psychological

At the renowned Shuchiin Academy, Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya are the student body's top representatives. Ranked the top student in the nation and respected by peers and mentors alike, Miyuki serves as the student council president. Alongside him, the vice president Kaguya. However, Miyuki and Kaguya will not confess to each other since their pride will not allow them. See how the two try get the other to confess.

This is a fun rom-com to watch. I recently finished this anime and I have to say this anime kept me entertained throughout the entire series. Although, we follow Shirogane and Shinomiya and their prideful antics in who is going to confess first, Chika Fujiwara is my favorite character in the series. She helps balance the characters out and she is just a fun characters. Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a great break from your traditional romance anime. It is fun, funny and enjoyable everyone. You must check it out!

4. Snow White with the Red Hair

  • 2 Seasons, 12 Episodes

  • Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Drama, Shoujo

Shirayuki is a cheerful, red-haired girl living in the country of Tanbarun who works diligently as an apothecary at her herbal shop. Her life changes drastically when she is noticed by the silly prince of Tanbarun, Prince Raji, who then tries to force her to become his concubine. Unwilling to give up her freedom, Shirayuki cuts her long red hair and escapes into the forest, where she is rescued from Raji by Zen Wistalia, the second prince of a neighboring country, and his two aides. Hoping to repay her debt to the trio someday, Shirayuki sets her sights on pursuing a career as the court herbalist in Zen's country, Clarines.

This is a great romance anime in my book because of the main characters. Although, this anime can be cheesy, I love how they grow and support each other. The relationship they have is symbiotic. Unlike your traditional fantasy romances where we have epic battles and magic scenes, this anime focuses on the characters and their stories. Meaning it is character driven, and each character plays a role in the development of the plot. This can put off many viewers since it is a lot of dialogue. However, the anime does a fantastic job of capturing the viewer with its animation. The anime is filled with vibrant colors combined to create a gorgeous world. This series does an amazing job of creating a world where the character relationships allow you to connect to them and cheer for them. I recommend this anime 100%!

3. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

  • 1 Season, 11 Episodes, 1 OVA

  • Genres: Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life,

Narumi Momose finds herself running late for her first day of work at a new office. Narumi is an otaku, and she doesn’t want anyone in her office to know. However, that all goes awry when she runs into her fellow otaku childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji. What will Narumi do know to keep her secret from being exposed.

This series is a great break from the high school setting romance. We have some office workers trying to keep their otaku lives a secret. This is what every anime nerd can hope for when looking for a relationship. We watch as these two otakus learn about each other and how their relationship deepens and develops. Narumi and Hirotaka are quirky, awkward and likable. They remind me so much of my college years. It is a short, enjoyable anime for anyone looking for a romance. I had a great time watching this anime! You won’t be disappointed in watching it!

2. Horimiya

  • 1 Season, 13 Episodes

  • Genres: Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life, School, Shounen

Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura walk on different path in their school lives. Hori a smart and popular young lady and Miyamura a shy and meek young man. However, not everything is what seems. Hori has a secret she keeps from her friends and classmate; the same goes for Miyamura. In a chance encounter these two unlike people form a beautiful relationship away from everyone. Can their relationship blossom into something more than friendship?

When I heard this was becoming an anime, I was so excited! The manga enticed me, and I read it avidly. The story is cute, wholesome and a unique take on the teenage romance. CloverWorks does a fantastic job adapted the anime into an animation. It lived up to the expectations for the manga readers and the anime watchers it provides a fun rom-com. The characters are charismatic, and their relationship is dynamic enough to keep you captivated. The story is simple, but the characters are what make this anime for me. You cannot help but fall in love with them.

1. TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

  • Genres: Comedy, Romance, Shounen

Nasa Yuzaki a young brilliant boy who seems to have his whole life planned out. However, fate comes and intervenes with his plans. Having a near death experience a beautiful young lady saves him. As the injured Nasa chases after the young lady declaring his love for her. Confused but swayed by his determination accepts his proposal except with the intent of getting married.

This was a sweet, wholesome romance anime to watch. The slow buddling love of the young characters is heartfelt. The entire time I was watching this anime, I was smiling from ear to ear. This whole anime is heartfelt and funny. We watch as these two characters learn about the married life and love. We watch their bashful yet cute interactions. If you don’t watch any other anime on this list, you must watch this one! Just go check it out!
