Winter Anime Bombshells: 2023

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

With new seasonal anime for this winter rolling out we have some major bombshells being released like Vinland Saga 2, Bungo Stray Dogs (5), and In/Spectre 2. However, there are plenty of new shows airing over the course of this winter. Having a multitude of genres, there should be a little bit of everything for someone. Here are some of my personal winter anime bombshells.

Tomo-chan is a Girl

  • Genres: Comedy, Romance

  • 1 Season, 13 Episodes

It is well known that romance series are a dime dozen within the anime community and not all romance animes are good. Being a surplus of romance animes, some animes get overlooked when being realized. This is one of those animes. Childhood friends Tomo Aizawa and Junichirou "Jun" Kubota do everything together. However, Tomo has fallen in love with Jun but there is one problem, Jun sees Tomo as a friend. Can Tomo show Jun her feminine side and make Jun fall in love with her? Or will her first love crash and burn?

When being one of the boys goes wrong sums up Tomo’s love life. Tomo has always been a tom boy and has had more friendships with boys than girls. Tomo even has a few female admirers, but Tomo wants to be a girl. However, being a typical female comes as a struggle when you are known for your right hook. Tomo is one of my favorite female characters this anime season. She is a strong female character both physically and emotionally. She is charismatic to both genders and has a heart of gold. It is really hard not to like Tomo. Furthermore, the interactions between the supporting characters and the romantic interest Jun are comedic and enjoyable. Moreover, the pacing of the storyline is steady and well done. The character interactions are well developed, amusing and fluid. None of the interactions feel forced or out of place. A great rom-com anime. Overall, if you enjoy the animes Romantic Killer or Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun then you’ll enjoy this series.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

  • Genres: Fantasy, Yuri, Isekai, Romance

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

Princess Anisphina (Anis) Wynn Palletia is a bit of a dreamer This can’t be helped since she reincarnated with her past memories. Choosing to follow her dreams, Anis renounces the throne to start her new life. Will Anis regret her choices, or will she achieve her dream?

As I watched this anime, only one thought came to mind: how well executed this anime is. From the plot to the character development-interactions and animation. This is anime is satisfying like when you take a drink of cold water on a hot summer day. A good anime layers one another and support each aspect of the story. This anime does that. We have a steady plot with characters that help drive the story. At the center of this story is Anis. Anis is a well thought out character. She has the charisma, determination and pleasant personality that complements the rest of the characters. This can especially be seen in the interactions between.

High Card

  • Genres: Action, Fantasy, Organized Crime

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

Looking for a way to save his orphanage from closing its doors, Finn sets off to the casino to make it big. However, Finn discovers a deadly secret that changes his life. Will Finn be able to survive after what he has learned?

High Card is an action driven anime that gives 91 Days and Bungo Stray Dogs vibes. We have a fast-paced anime that barrels through you in about 4-5 episodes what is happening to Finn, and what he must do to stay alive. I really enjoy this fasted paced action sequence because it really enhances the survival of learning deadly secrets. When encountering life and death situations we do not want a slow burn but a rapid fire of events. Alongside the fantasy aspect of this anime, it truly makes it a hidden gem of this season.

Buddy Daddies

  • Genres: Action, Comedy, Organized Crime

  • 1 Season, 13 Episodes

After assassination mission goes awry Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa because of 4-year-old Miri Unasaka. Assassins Kazuki and Rein are now responsible for this child? What could possibly go wrong when two clueless assassins raising a child?

If you watched Spy x Families and The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting then you found another fun family anime. This in anime we have our wonderful co-parents, our golden retriever Kazuki Kurusu and black cat Rei Suwa. This is a causal anime that encompasses the “realities” of balancing work and child rearing: give or take the hitman career. we see this duo trying to figure out what to do with our 4-year-old child Miri Unasaka. A potential downside I hear is that Miri’s character is an annoying child but if you work, have or are around very young children then you know they can be annoying. I feel this anime does a good job of portraying a typical 4-year-old. A child that does not have impulse control or can suppress their emotions. I really enjoy how all three characters blend together to make a makeshift family. Furthermore, the soundtrack for this series adds the cherry on time with its jazz inspired melodies. All in all, this is an enjoyable anime to put on a Saturday afternoon.
