*Spoilers
As anime beginnings to rise in popularity, we get to see a rise in new and old animes. As a multitude of animes becoming open to viewers through different platforms, viewers are exposed to different genres and sub-genres. In other words, there is a little bit of something for everyone. So unbeknownst to some, there are animes that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some of my favorite anime characters that are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Hatsuharu Sohma
Anime: Fruit Baskets
Hatsuharu (Haru) is a bisexual anime character. He is a member of the Sohma family and the zodiac of the Taurus. We are introduced to Haru when come in search of Yuki and Kyo. This is where we learn that Haru loved Yuki and Yuki was his first love. Later in the series we find out he is in a relationship with Rin Sohma. Haru never shied-away from his love or affection towards Yuki. Even saying it more than once how he loved him. Haru is a character with many folds and times can be difficult to understand; however he always stays true to himself and those he loves.
Lily Hoshikawa
Anime: Zombieland
Lily is a transgender anime character whose color scheme is inspired by the transgender flag. Lily was born as a boy but identifies as girl. By 12, Lily was living as a girl and now as an undead she continues to do so. Lily understands who she and what she wants. One of my favorite scenes with Lily she declares “I’m not Masao! I’m Lily!” Signifying that she is Lily and always will be Lily. Lily is such a beautiful character to see within in an anime series. A huge step forward for LGBTQ+ representation.
Kaoru Kurita
Viewer Discretion is advised!
Anime: Wonder Egg Priority
Kaoru is another transgender anime character, who was born female but identify as male. Kaoru also wears the transgender flag as their color scheme. Kaoru is often seen in a light blue jacket with pink and white strips, helping solidify their character. Kaoru had always struggled with his sex, and we can see his struggles within the series. Kaoru has a tragic backstory with sexual assault. This tragic event furthered his determination to becomes a man. Even though Kaoru's character set up is tragic and saddening it does bring into light the atrocities the transgender community can face. This is a good series to watch but for those who are sensitive or have a triggering past I recommend skipping this anime. Viewer discretion is advised!
Victor +Yuri
Anime: Yuri on Ice
They have to be one of my favorite couples of all times. We are able to see their relationship blossom both romantically and professionally. The two shared several sweet moments together throughout the series. Yuri on Ice is a staple with in the anime community as an LGBTQ+ couple and a 10/10 series to watch!
Haruka Tenou+ Michiru Kaiou
Anime: Sailor Moon
Haruka and Michiru were one of the first LGBTQ+ couples that I saw growing up. They are one of the most prominent lesbian couples in mainstream anime. Haruka and Michiru in the US anime adaptation they are considered cousins but anyone with eyes knew cousin didn’t behave that way. Haruka and Michiru have one of most endearing relationships throughout the series. You can’t help but fall in love with them.
Touya Kinomoto+ Yukito Tsukishiro
Anime: Cardcaptor Sakura
Touya and Yukito in Cardcaptor Sakura have always appeared more than friends in the anime. In the anime there a few instances that you see their attraction for each other. Their love is strong and powerful to resist any obstacles that they are faced with. They are a great staple in the anime community for the anime and their relationship.
