Animes that Slipped through the Cracks: Fall 2022

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

With some heavy hitter animes like Bleach: Blood arc, Spy X Family, Blue Lock, and Chainsaw Man coming to bat; other animes become bench warmers for the rest of the Fall seasons. Here are some animes that never got the chance to bat this season.

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss

  • Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Isekia

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

Aileen Lauren Dautriche's life changes forever on the day her engagement to the crown prince Cedric Jeanne Elmir is nullified so he can be together with Lilia Rainworth. Triggering Aileen's memories from her past life—she has been reincarnated in an otome game as the villainess, who is destined to die in the final act. How will Aileen survive?

With new isekai animes being dropped every season, it can be difficult to be interested in this genre of animes. However, this is a fun and lighthearted anime. A great casual anime filled with comedy and likeable characters. We follow Aileen who has recovered her memories after breaking up with the crown prince, realizing her situation Aileen is determined to stay alive. What a better way to stay alive then romancing the demon lord and your ex’s brother. Aileen being our MC, we have a strong and straightforward character. This is nice break from the traditional clichés of misunderstanding romances. The constant back and forth of miscommunications, misunderstandings and third-party intervention of the main romance can be tiresome. But in the case of this series, we have two characters that know exactly what they want within the relationship. What I also enjoyed about this series are the supporting characters. They help our MC in the best ways. Furthermore, animation is nice. The movement of the characters is fluid, and the color schemes are nicely done. However, one of the complaints that I have is the pacing of the story. The story is a bit fast leading to some confusion, which takes away from the series a bit. Overall, this a chill rom-com to sit back on a lazy afternoon and watch.

Do it yourself

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy, Friendship

  • 1 Season, 12 Episodes

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has led to the development of cutting-edge technologies that have rapidly evolved society. As a result, schools have begun incorporating these technologies into their curriculum, leaving behind the ways of the old. In the case of two childhood friends, they wish to attend the elite Yuyu Girls' Vocational High School. However only Miku "Purin" Suride gets accepted into the school. Whereas Serufu Yua is rejected and enters the traditional Gatagata Girls' High School instead. Having been separated, will their friendship survive? Especially when Serufu joins a club, making new friends.

If you enjoy the animes Nichijou-My Ordinary Life, Laid Back Camp or A Place Further then the Universe, then you will enjoy this anime. I started this anime because the art style reminded me of Nichijou, and I am fan of the series. This series made me smile a lot. It a wonderful story of friendship, carpentry, and youth. What made the series in was the amity the young girls had for one another. The character slowly started falling into place like a puzzle. They brought something to the table to make the friendship stronger. This is a wonderful anime to check out in your spare time. Before you know it, you will have been binge watch the entire series.

Raven of the Inner Palace

  • Genres: Josei, Fantasy, Mystery, Historical, Supernatural

  • 1 season, 13 Episodes

Among the royal court, there is an individual feared as much as revered: the Raven Consort. Residing in her jet-black palace and isolated from the emperor, she is the subject of countless rumors. She is a consort in name and never preforms nightly duties with the emperor. Possessing mystical abilities, she is tasked with solving the mysteries of the palace from curses, to ghost and more. How will the newly appointed Raven Consort manage her position?

This was a hidden gem of the fall season in my opinion. Not enough people talked about this series. For the recorded, I would like to state that this anime is classified as a Josei. In other words, it is an anime target towards adult, especially women. Knowing this, I can see how this series flew under the radar with heavy Shounen animes. Shoxue, the MC, is a young lady that help the newly appointed emperor with mysteries surrounding the palace. I truly love the dynamic of Shoxue and the emperor. They are dependent and independent of one another. Furthermore, the animation is stunning! The color palette of the characters and the scenery is beautiful. This a must watch anime!

Play It Cool, Guys

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Comedy

  • 1 Season, Still airing

Souma Shiki, Hayate Ichikura, Shun Futami, and Takayuki Mima all have one thing in common: they are airheads. We see how these four characters try to playoff their silly mistakes in a way to look cool.

A fantastic light-hearted anime! This anime encompasses all the silly little things we do in our daily lives; such plugging in our phone into the charger but for it not to be plugged into the wall or forgetting to set your alarm and waking up late. This is a fun, easy going anime. Nothing to serious or exaggerating. When you need a break from all the shounen, drama, and romance come and watch this anime.

Eternal Boys

  • Genres: Slice of Life, Idol, Comedy

  • 1 season, Currently airing

The story follows six middle-aged men who have experienced success and failures in their lives. One day, they decide to become an idol group and overcome such barriers as their age and their physical condition.

Middle-aged men becoming idols sound ridiculous but, in all honesty, it is a great break from the traditional idol animes. We have men from all walks of life trying to form an idol group. It can see a bit ridiculous when you hear about men in their mid-30’s to mid-40’s singing and dancing. But you never know what life has in store for you. What I enjoy from this series is how character are all different and have a range of personalities and experiences. The most notable character and “normal” character is Kentaro Sanada. Your average 35 year old office work, who suddenly lost his job because his company closed. Now in a weird turn of events he is now part of an idol group. Sanada is the most relatable character in this series. He has the most normal reaction to potential middle aged men idol group but that what makes this series. We have characters breaking out of the boxes society sets for them. We are constantly being told how to behave, what to do and what not to do. If we divert from what is deemed appropriate, we are ridiculed and judge. This light-hearted anime takes a plunge into the unknown. Overall, this is a unique anime that put a wonderful twist on what life can be.

Honorable Mentions

  • Akiba Maid War (mafia maids)
