We are going to redefine the word “badass.” Most people when they hear the word badass, they assume the characters are strong in a certain way. However, someone can be badass without being strong in the general regards to physical aspects. In this blog I will be exploring different categories of badassery. In the anime industry, there are very few female anime characters that are badass, and some are overshadowed by more popular badass female character (Mikasa or Erza). I would like to shed some light on some female characters who are underrated and underappreciated.
5.Sango- Inuyasha
Sango lived in a small village known for their demon-slaying skills. At the young age of 16, Sango was considered one of the best demon slayers in the area. However, tragedy soon strikes when her village is decimated, and her family is killed. The only survivor of her village Sango, wants to seek revenge for her village and family. However, little does she know she is being used by a notorious villain. Learning the truth, Sango joins the group in order find justice her family, village, and herself.
Sango is a strong person, not only physically but emotionally as well. Having watched the destruction of her life, Sango takes the challenges to seek justice. We see a young teenager forced to grow mentally, and emotionally. Having faced a dark side of humanity, it doesn’t prevent her from laughing and creating other bonds around her. We bear witness to Sango strength and willpower through out the series of Inuyasha.
4. Tohru Honda- Fruit Baskets
Tohru Honda is a young high school orphan who strives to makes end meat. We are introduced to our protagonist who lives in a tent in the woods and unpecantly discovered by a classmate named Yuki. Learning of Tohru’s situation, Yuki invites her to live with him and his uncle. When getting to move into their house, Tohru discovers a family secret. What will happen to her?
Tohru Honda isn’t your typical badass. She isn’t strong or special in a way. I put her on this list for mental and emotional fortitude. She is strong support character. Most people have someone they can turn to in a time of need or someone that keeps it real with them. Tohru is that character! She accepts people even with their flaws. She smiles even if she hurt and cries for your sake. She isn’t badass in the sense that she can use physical strength to protect you but strong in the sense that she is on your side. She will try to protect you to best of her ability and support you. For example, when she learns a secret of one of the characters, she chases after them even though she is afraid. She still accepts them and loves them for being them. She is a pillar of support and sense of strength for other. Some people are lucky to have some one who supports and cherish them for being themselves. Tohru is a badass in her way and there is no argument.
3. Yoruichi Shinouin- Bleach
Yoruichi is the former captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13, as well as the former commander of the Stealth Force. However, she abandoned her post to follow Kisuke Urahara. Yoruichi is badass woman! She becomes a teacher for Ichigo in Ryoka Invasion arc. A little before this arc we are introduced to Yoruichi but is brought to life in the Soul Society. We watch her take on the other captains with her speed, strength and intelligence. This a woman who can hold her own in a fight. We are able to see Yoruichi’s strength when fighting an Espanda or captain Suì-Fēng. We also witness Yoruichi’s compassion for her comrades, such as Kisuke Urahara. Yoruichi is a strong, independent woman who I would leave my life in her hands.
2. Mereoleona Vermillion- Black Clover
Mereoleano Vermillion is a force to be reckoned with. She is the embodiment of pride, strength, courage and will power. She is a fierce beast that cares for her people and will train them to the brink of death. She is a loud and intimating woman who leads with everything she has. Mereoleona is a certified badass. No questions asked, it’s on sight.
1. Yona- Yona of the Dawn
Yona is the Crown princess of Kouka Kingdom, the only heir. Having been raised in the castle’s walls, Yona has never experienced hardships. However, that all changes when her father is killed, and she is betrayed by the person she loved the most. On the run with her loyal guard, Yona must survive to regain everything that is rightfully hers.
Yona is truly an underrated badass female. We witness how this pampered princess because a warrior. We watch her become strong both physically and mentally. As she travels gaining allies to reclaim her kingdom, we see her development. We watch her form relationship with powerful people and how she is able to comfort many challenges. Yona is able to become a pillar a strength for allies and herself. Sadly, the anime is only one season and it does give justice to this series.
